The Money Minute
Making the Most of Your Money
Dear Joan,
"Our attitude is our thought life turned inside out."   Joyce Meyer

Dog Tax StressedIt is that time of year again, tax time in which there is a flurry of activity surrounding your money. Yet, as the date for filing your taxes approaches, I think to myself how negative this time of year has become. The energy surrounding your money has become frenzied, frightful, and anxious. I personally do not believe this is the place you want to be with your money.

What do you mean it has become frenzied, frightful and anxious?

It is common for many to not keep up with their money picture on an ongoing basis so when it is time to file taxes it is a time of stress. This stress shows up in a flurry of activity as you rush around trying to gather all the necessary documents and data to file your tax returns by April 15th. In that flurry of activity you have an energy about you that is frenzied due to the rushing around in between the tasks of life and work, gathering information. You also end up with frightful and anxious energy as well since many times the deadline looms and you still haven't figured out where you put all those necessary tax documents that you swore were on your desk!

How does this affect my money?

I have noticed in the years I have been counseling individuals and small businesses on their money that the very energy you feel within shows up on the outside. If you are frantic on the inside, that is what will show up in your physical environment as well. Most likely it will show up as not enough time to get bills paid or to sit down and make a plan for your money. Something always gets in the way. Whether this behavior is one of conscious doing or subliminal, the result is the same.

But my life is busy, how am I to fit it all in?

b&w dog preparing taxesI do believe that is the most favorite excuse of the century! I hear it so often that it actually starts to sound like the truth. Yet I do not believe, for most of you, that this is the truth. An organizing friend of mine loves to say "you always find time for those things you love to do" and I couldn't agree more. It is amazing how you find time to do what you really WANT and equally amazing that you find a good excuse when you don't.

How can I get different results?

Meditating dogFirst you must allow yourself enough self reflection, quiet time to know what you really want in life. There is so much external stimulus these days, things that distract and side-track us, that it takes some serious grounding and silence to clear the way to what you really desire to be and do in life. You must allow a few moments of quiet each day to hear your inner message. How can it possibly get through to you over the sound of the television, radio, or video games?

The second thing would be to take that inner message and direction, and live it each day. In order to actually manifest that which you desire, every step you take must be in alignment with that desire. Your external persona reflects that which comes from your internal self.

So, how would this make tax time more joyous?

JoyfulI have found that when my clients focus upon an end result that they wish, that it happens. Period, no exceptions. Using that knowledge, I encourage you to get clear on what outcome you are desiring. If it is joy you desire, then recognize that joy already exists. It is just a matter of your attitude towards the event or happening which opens the door for you to experience it. Recognize that it is not your circumstances that make you happy or unhappy but your attitude toward your circumstances. So, change your attitude towards tax time, see it as a time of knowing, unfolding, and learning. This attitude most certainly is a better one than the other!

Having an exceptional business means knowing what you want from your business and then stopping at nothing to get it. Yet most solo-entrepreneurs start a business before they even truly know what they want from it. They choose something that seems fun or they have some knowledge about and off they go. There is no pre-planning, no vision, and maybe not even any money to back it up. How do you know where you are going if you did not stop to ask ...

à WHAT DO I WANT FROM THIS BUSINESS and WHAT DOES MY FUTURE LOOK LIKE IF I STICK WITH IT?

What was your motivation to start your business? Was it to get away from a dull and lifeless job? Alternately maybe you just wanted more time to yourself to call your own. Possibly, you are raising children and looking for flexibility? Whatever the reason, most of you are heading in the wrong direction and do not even know it.

It is YOUR responsibility now to make your business successful. If it is not profitable, then it is not successful. That may be a harsh reality for some of you. Yet someone has to say it. If you do not accept this truth about your business then you will spend many years in frustration.

Now is the time to get real and become profitable. How do you do this? You do it by beginning and building upon the very passion and dream that started you in the direction of solo-entrepreneurship in the first place. However, it does take a vision, planning, and money mastery to get there.

Thank you for taking a minute or two out of your day to read about money. Here's wishing you a joyous relationship with it!

Best regards,
All in a row
