Dear Joan,

"When there is a start to be made, don't step over! Start where you are." Edgar Cayce

Historically speaking, our society focuses on January being about making resolutions. This can often be a futile and frustrating exercise which focuses our attention on repairing perceived lacks. For some reason many of us believe we are somehow broken and must fix ourselves versus seeing ourselves already complete right where we stand. It is natural for us to want to continually move forward and create more. As human beings, we are always working on enhancing our lives and equally important, our relationship to money. Yet, in order to fulfill our inherent wholeness, we must accept our completeness, starting from where we are.

In this month's Money Minute, I would like to speak to New Beginnings versus resolutions which Edgar Cayce said so succinctly in this quote "start where you are." No flagellating yourself for past errors or omissions. Instead, contemplate moving forward, creating an atmosphere of plenty, and realizing you are whole and perfect already.

How can I be Whole and Perfect Already when my Money is in Chaos?
All in a row
I believe that our wholeness and perfection came with us when we were born. In fact, I believe it is innately who we are as the outward expression of spirit. Yet through the efforts we make day to day, and the struggles we have, we tend to find ourselves swimming upstream against the current of this perfection.  As we struggle with this day to day, fighting the very perfection that we are, we will notice an out picturing of that inner struggle in our money and other aspects of our lives.
How do I keep From Struggling?
Truthfully I believe it is actually part and parcel of who we are as innate beings to perceive opposition or something contrary to our wishes as struggle. It is natural to come up against what we do not want in life so that we instinctively shift our thinking to what we want. Yet somewhere within ourselves we do not believe we deserve that which we want or we see it as impossible. That is where the struggle begins ... within. And as you fight against the very thing you desire you stay exactly where you are.
So, Where do I Begin?

There are several approaches, attitudes, or action steps that you can do to begin. Yet as I see it, the most important first step would be to shift your thinking to accept that no matter what, it is all good. Yes, all of it, no matter how desperately nasty it might seem. It all begins with your perception and if you do not shift that perception then you are right back to keeping yourself stuck right where you are.

I recently heard a quote that makes total sense and that is "when you complain, you remain" (Joyce Meyers), whether that is complaining out loud adamantly or quietly within.

I Am Not Complaining, so Why Does it Remain?

Many times we do not realize that judging something as unacceptable is actually quietly complaining. Do I want you to accept something that you do not want? Most certainly not. However, to begin it is best to see it as something that guides you to what you truly want and gives you the opportunity to see reflected to you what is not working. Notice what opens up for you when you look at what shows up in your life, especially those things that show up over and over.

Recently I had an opportunity to see this for myself, up close and personal. I received an email from a friend which appeared to have many excuses in it. In fact they were numbered to help me see how well thought out they were. My first reaction was to shoot them down. I could see past the excuses to the truth of the matter. However, since that initial reaction I have had the opportunity to see that this is the very thing that I do. I make excuses to keep myself from following through on what I want. I keep myself from taking action with very well documented, numbered, EXCUSES.

How Does This Relate to Money?

As you probably can guess it relates to money on all levels, every day. You can simply begin by seeing all things as good, especially those moments where money seems to be slipping through your fingers at a rapid rate. Ask yourself what does this reflect about my own inner beliefs? Where are my attitudes surrounding this rapid flow? What other options or paths may I take? How must I shift my beliefs to see another outcome? It certainly may appear as if money slipping through your fingers is a negative thing, yet viewed from 'it's all good' you have the opportunity to see how quickly the flow of money may also come in. The flow is not just out, it is in as well.
Ask the Questions, Wait for the Answers?

quizzical doggieI would like to encourage you to ask the questions of yourself before you jump to action. Most times we make decisions based upon a perceived crisis or from a place of being overwhelmed. I ask that instead you ask the question, then wait quietly and patiently for the answer. The answer might just surprise you.

Can you REALLY Learn Money Principles from a Book?

joanslogodog.jpg

I am sure that many of you have bought self help books of some sort over the years. I know I have, in many areas and spheres of life. There are books out there to help you lose weight, help you attain your best life, give you the steps to build wealth, and even books to help you get your groove back! I have found almost every self-help book I have read to be revealing and helpful. How exciting it is to realize that someone else out there has had the same problem as you and they have all the answers you have been seeking. As you walk down the aisles of your most favorite book store or peruse a book website, it brings a thrill to your heart to see the solutions to all that is ailing you. You hold your breath as you read the book jacket to see if the problem truly does get solved. But of course you must buy the book and delve into it deeper to truly know that answer. Surely it cannot be as simple as the steps outlined in the overview of the book! There must be some deep secret or knowledge that is given in the recesses of the pages. I know I have spent many a day reading books for this very knowledge or answer. Yet I do know somewhere deep within myself that no one has the answers for me, only I do. AND we ALL have the answers within.

Am I saying not to buy any self-help books ever? Most certainly I am not. They are great sources of entertainment and certainly may be the very vehicle that opens your eyes to or awakens the solution within. However, I am of the belief that most things must be experienced to be solved.

bikedoggie.jpgThe best example of this was given by David Neagle (known as the
"The Million Dollar Income Acceleration Coach,” see www.davidneagle.com) in a recent tele-seminar in which he gave the example of learning to ride a bike. He asked if you can learn to ride a bike by reading a book. And as you well know, the answer is no. You only learn by actually experiencing it. Yes, you can most certainly learn the steps to riding a bike or even what a bike looks like (in case you have never seen one). You may learn safety ideas or even dangers of riding from a book. Yet you must actually get on the bike to learn to ride it. You must touch it, sit upon it, move the pedals, and let it roll, feel the requirement of balancing upon it.

As with anything you might want to learn or to solve, the biggest stumbling block is your own self-defeating THOUGHTS. As you read about riding a bike it may seem quite simple and you may easily visualize yourself soaring like the wind. However, what about those of us who fear it, see it as impossible, or wonder how it would be possible to stop once you get rolling! I know I have thought this very thing as I see an airplane or jet soar into the sky and wonder how it stays up there! Yet it most certainly does. And no matter what you believe as you read about riding a bike you still do not know how to ride a bike until you actually go through the process on it.

But let’s get back to learning from a book about money principles. I do believe you can gain knowledge of money principles from a book. You may even become aware of the best solution in the universe for the very thing you are worried and fretting about. Yet nothing happens until you let the energy of the solution fill you up so that you are able to actually apply the ideas and steps. You must actually believe and be fully committed to the solution before you even begin to bring it to you. I have spoken to many clients about this very thing. They come to me seeking ideas and solutions to their money problems and I have said to them, the solution will not help if you are not ready for it.

Those very same fruitless thoughts are especially problematic surrounding money and its solutions. Usually we spend a lot of time fretting on the problem, tossing solutions over and over in our minds, and deciding none of it will work. We fret over whether we will make it to the next pay check or be able to retire when we wish to retire. The entire time your thoughts are on the problem and as you may well know, your thoughts create your feelings, which creates your behaviors, which creates your actions and those actions create results. It all begins with your thoughts and if your thoughts are in opposition from the solution you are seeking it will evade you.

It does sound rather hopeless, doesn’t it? Yet, I know that each of us has the answer within. We know exactly what we need to do, have, and be. Possibly reading a book will awaken that very inner knowing. In fact, I believe that is exactly what is happening as we read. It all feels so familiar, so easy, and so simple and we ask ourselves “why didn’t I think of that?” My sense is that you did think of that. You went looking for the answer. You were wanting a solution and the book appeared for you to awaken that inner knowledge. You asked, it was given, and now your work is to be ready to receive it.
